Yuji Otaki
Solicitor
Yuji is a compassionate solicitor who has a strong desire to protect the vulnerable public. He has qualifications in Aged and Community Care and previously held a Senior First Aid workplace certificate. Yuji draws on his years of experience being engaged as a NAATI qualified Japanese interpreter at various Courts (Magistrate, Supreme, District, Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia) on matters including criminal, civil, family, commercial disputes, and migration.
Yuji was born and raised in Hiroshima but now calls Brisbane home. He has never met anyone from his hometown Kabe since moving to Australia, so if you’re from Kabe give us a shout. Yuji highly recommends travelling to Hiroshima to try the local okonomiyaki which is different to the rest of Japan, but he also admits the food he cannot survive without is actually katsudon.
Yuji first landed in Adelaide as an exchange student from Shudo University (Bachelor of Arts majoring in politics). It wasn’t long before Yuji experienced his first hot dry summer in Australia, and he knew that he had found his second home. He transferred his degree to Adelaide University law school, and upon graduating, was admitted to the Supreme Court of South Australia.
We are lucky that Yuji now calls Brisbane his home. His years of interpreting has reinforced his view that it is incredibly difficult navigating Court matters for anyone, let alone individuals who’s first language is not English. He has a great respect for legal practitioners who understands this and strives to bridge the gap between culture and language for equal access to justice for all.
